Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A senior representative commented the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
